East Coast shows June 2018

Well, Even In Blackouts is back at it.  We had always remained a pretty close family, but after the 50th Birthday Bash of Jughead, it was obvious that the band wasn't done writing and playing together.  So hopefully the gang will write some posts here over the next couple months about their new record and their upcoming tour.

Singersongers with Dino Stamatopoulos

Jughead spent a pleasant time in Los Angeles with friends.  While there he stopped by Starburns Studios and appeared on Dino Stamatopoulos' Singersongers Podcast.  And as odd as it may seem, Dino was only familiar with Even In Blackouts.  So pleasantly most of this podcast is about songwriting in relation to Even In Blackouts

EIB Record Titles

I have had many friends that are masters of appropriating pre-existing material . It is a form of creation, that views with a critical eye, the creations of others, and steals to make it one’s own. Many of my actor friends are good at this, it is also a technique that Ben Weasel used on almost every Screeching Weasel record title. I was never very good at this, this technique is often a surefire way to capture an audiences attention. You have to have a keen understanding of pop culture, and underground trends, and how to accurately listen to the pulse of your audience. I can never sense things too far outside myself to use such tools. With many elements of Even In Blackouts, it was my goal to be wholly me, in the moment and hoping to discover a few universal truths, not appropriating a complete concept but to borrow parts and mingle them with my own jumbled ideas. (Of course, mixed and influenced by the amazing creative voices of the musicians and friends I have been able to work with.)
(What I nurtured through my love of 70s concept records combined with Ben Weasels take on it, was to admit that during a period of time, an artist is creating from a certain point of view, and one cannot escape from this point of view, until the facets of it have been fully explored. So in Screeching Weasel then with me in Even In Blackouts, we began to explore loose concept records, admitting that a collection of songs marks a point in time, when although they may seem diverse, are really a study from one frame of mind, striving to be manifested through multiple perspectives.)
What follows is a music geek’s interpretation of my album titles for Even In Blackouts:
Myths & Imaginary Magicians:
This is a reference to the first song I wrote for EIB, Missing Manifesto. The song itself is about: Will the art we make excuse the behavior we conduct while achieving our goals? If we create good art it justifies our self destruction and our asshole behavior to others, if it does not create impressive art, we are just another asshole in a sea of stupidity. It also had to do with the idea of trying to live up to a perception of the self from the outside, do we become what we are perceived to be? Do we fight against what others believe us to be? How do we just try to be ourselves when the myth gains strength over time? The imaginary magicians part was my criticism of this striving to be in control of your own myth, to me it is like striving to be a magician with no audience that really matters, complicating our relationships because it seems enigmatic and complex. (This album is predominately about my obsession with my friend Peter’s Suicide and the decaying of my working relationship with Ben Weasel.)
Four Shadows on a Wall:
This is a title that I worked on with Dan Lipman. Even In Blackouts uses, as themes, glowing, shadows, and the affect of light, as a metaphor for trying to find meaning in our lives through the pursuit of art as a living, and also a more literal reference to being able to play in blackouts. The concept behind the title is more about fun wordplay than meaning. Most of the meaning came after the title was decided. Dan and I liked the concept of combining the fact that there was now only four of us with the idea of Plato’s shadows on the wall of a cave. And when Dan brought this up, I was excited, because it alluded to my prior themes of trying to break through the illusions to see what is really there. Is it just shadows? Are we just superficial? Can we actually get to a deeper meaning through the used of lyrics and music?
Zeitgeist’s Echo:
Zeitgeist, the literal translation from the German is Time Ghost, or the spirit of the times. This title was my more puffed up view of what I was trying to do with EIB. I thought I was trying to break barriers, but I was never sure if they were just barriers of my own making or barriers of music in general. I guess I was always hoping my band would be creating something unique, but ultimately what became more important is creating something I had never done before, to use guitar chords I had never used before, and to challenge Liz, who after the first record, I realized that she was an amazing singer who’s talents exceeded my own understanding of music. She helped me challenge myself. So the idea of the Echo, was a puffed up belief that in general the world was producing art that imagined itself “of the time,” but was really just living in an echo of what had happened previously. It was a title to force myself to try to break my preconceived notions of what a band was supposed to be doing.
Fall Of The House Of Even:
I had been studying the Edgar Allen Poe short story Fall Of the House of Usher, when my band began to fall apart, and all that was left was me an Liz, and a new drummer, Bice, who lived hundreds of miles away. Liz freaked out when the Lipmans left the band, and she believed it was the end. But I had experienced in Screeching Weasel a similar change of ranks between Boogada Boogada Boogada and My Brain Hurts. I knew that an overhaul like this COULD lead to a more fruitful arrangement of musicians and friends. (In this case Gub Conway & Phillip Hill) I had also been going through a break up, of a sexual nature, and much of this came out in the writing too. I had asked the new member Gub to contribute some songs, and I told him that I had been playing with the idea of decay and hauntings in the style of Edgar Allen Poe, specifically the affect of ghosts on our decision making in the present, how our baggage never really goes away. This record is where I learned that I could still commit to concept records and trust Gub to write alongside me, to join in the concept, to try his hardest to understand what I was trying to do, and to commit fully to making it work in his writing for the band. Bice and Phillip used to say that there job was to try to make musical sense out of the fucked up ideas Gub and I would create. I always liked that idea. It was comforting.
Thresholds From The Basement:
We had no label and no money. Fans helped us raise the money to build a studio in my basement and to continue onwards. The record is about doors. That is what I told Gub. I told him to write songs about the moment of walking through a doorframe. This records is about the moment of change. It is about those moments we pop out of ourselves and watch from above and witness ourselves moving from one chapter in our lives to another. The added layer I gave myself was to see this concept through very personal relations with my family. The concept behind song titles, of which we only committed partially, was to create ones that were not easily remembered. I had a good time with this for many of the songs on the record.
So, there it is. I hope you found some enjoyment in reading this, and that it may cause you to listen to these open-veined-songs we created for you.

Myths & Imaginary Magicians (Debut Record)

"Perfectly arr
anged music, dead on vocals for such music, and great lyrical content is what makes this cd a great listen." - Askew Reviews

Foreshadows On The Wall

Even in Blackouts' second release, Foreshadows on the Wall, adds to the band's manifesto of creating acoustic music that is both powerful and melodic. Even in Blackouts have been stunning audiences with their highly energetic acoustic pop that transcends an amazing array of styles. The astonishing resumes of the band's members conjure a trend setting quality to their distinctive sound; a cast of some of the most influential artists in the pop underground today. Even in Blackouts is comprised of the stunning voice of vocalist Lizzie Eldredge, Screeching Weasel co-founder guitarist John "Jughead" Pierson, drummer Dan Lumley (Screeching Weasel, Squirtgun, Common Rider, The Mopes) and includes a special musical appearance by Danny Vapid (Screeching Weasel, The Methadones, Riverdales, The Mopes.) The band's distinctive pedigree espouses the notion of always to lead, never to follow. And this release is yet another chapter in a continually changing story arch for these trend smashing musicians.

Zeitgeist's Echo

"The voice and words are what you might find in an indie
coffee shop in the mountains (I was thinking Seattle or Asheville, NC), wit
h a lot of folk influence, filtered through a strainer of Sunday worship service. Lizzie Eldredge is fluent in both the intimate tones of the coffee shop poet, and the husky shouts of a punk singer. She shows real talent, straining with intensity at the end of phrases, like in ‘Curtains part 1”. Harmony comes from guest vocalists and other band members, especially a duet with Dan Vapid of the Queers on ‘In A Letter..’. The ‘Curtains’ trilogy of songs turns the tension of relationships into a philosophical critique with a delicious vocal harmony at the end a
nd spoken word throughout the first part. The songwriting is calm and mature, exactly poetry put to song, haunted by images of morning and light, dying and ghosts of relationships past. It’s like they sat down and converted a beautiful painting into musical form.

Although Even in Blackouts may be relatively new, their members bring years of experience to the table with the complexity of
Zeitgeist’s Echo. This will infiltrate the scene as a beautiful and unusual band that listeners of all types just can’t help listening to."

Fall Of The House Of Even

For their third full-length release, Even In Blackouts has taken another step in the progression of their sound. Every track on Fall of the House of Even takes a separate approach as if they were different rooms in a decrepit house. Each one of those rooms carries its own occupant, and with that entity comes different musical influences ranging from punk, bluegrass, jazz and R&B. Match the occasionally dark undertones with their always present energy and angelic female voice, and you get EIB’s most inspired release yet.

Thresholds From The Basement

Even In Blackouts' fourth and strongest release finds them once again pressing at the walls of their pop-punk origins to emerge with a sound that is richer, more unique, and more inviting than any record store category can define. 'Thresholds' is the diamond of their rough history. Recorded on a shoe-string budget, it holds the essence of all punk music.

Chivalry is NOT Dead, It's just Bleeding. Please help out our Bassist Phillip Hill by sending any cash you can to the paypal donation center our friend Mass Giorgini set up for him. He has no health insurance and will be out of music action for at least three months.

Here is the donation email for paypal: helpphilliphill@gmail.com

From Phillip Hill:

"I'm finally home from the hospital after getting jumped by four guys on Friday night. These guys were attacking a girl in a parking lot where my car was parked and I tried to save her. They were basically grabbing the girl by the arms and pulling her back and forth. They may have been trying to force her into their car. I walked over and said, "Hey! What the hell are you guys doing?!" She broke away from them and ran over to me. I asked her if she was o.k., and she said yes and thanked me for helping her. Then the guys charged me and tackled me to the ground. I landed on my back on top of a concrete parking block, breaking four of my ribs and collapsing my right lung. Then all four of them took turns stomping and kicking my chest, ribs, and head. One of them ripped the side-view mirror off of my car and started smashing the glass into my face repeatedly.

As they were stomping me on the ground, I noticed that the girl was still standing there crying with her hands over her mouth. She looked like she was debating on trying to help me. I managed to make eye contact with her and yelled for her to "RUN!". Then they started smashing my face with my side-view mirror some more and stomping my face. I guess she got away while I had the thugs distracted. I managed to get into my car and lock myself inside. I started to call the cops, but they saw what I was doing. Then I realized one of the guys had my keys! They said, "Hang up the fucking phone and we'll give you your keys and 30 seconds to get out of here before we drag you out of your car and beat your fucking ass to death." I drove down the street, barely able to breathe because of my ribs and lung. As I was driving, 911 called back. I pulled over and told them I needed an ambulance. By the time the ambulance and the cops got there, the thugs were long gone."

I just wanted to thank the donators to our record, and also a special thank you to the people who are continuing to send us donations after the campaign has ended. The donations that are still coming in have been very helpful. Liz, Gub, and I are flying out to Bice's studio in Boston to mix the record, and hopefully it will be ready for release in late August or early September.

I have one more request, if anybody has access to a Photoshop for a pc laptop that I can have, this can be used as a donation for the record, and will received a signed cd. I need to design the cover, but I no longer have a version of photoshop that can be used with my sony laptop.

Please e-mail me if you have access to such a thing.

Thanks

Well EIB fans, it is that time again for a new Even In Blackouts Record, and once again we would like to create a record outside of the box. We are going to fund the whole project removed from the limitations and the imagined and/or actual pressure of a labels monetary decision making. We realized that we could record a new cd with less funds if we rented equipment and did it ourselves. Since we have three engineers, and at least one carpenter in the band, plus a house, there is no reason why we shouldn’t turn my basement into a recording studio and record the whole album in the underground confines of my home. It is not that we have any problems with the idea of a label, it just seems many prospective labels have problems with us. It is inherent in the concept of EIB to experiment with styles and to take chances whenever we can, and this doesn't always jive with a label trying to promote a band or a style of music. I understand this reasoning and subsequent perception of the band. I myself constantly feel the pressure as a creator to fight my own instincts to appease the public by giving them what they think they want instead of what could potentially pleasantly surprise them. We have no hostility in regards to this situation, it just limits our choices as to how to put out a record.

Our last recording, Fall Of The House Of Even, was partially funded by donations made by you, our fans. In return many of you received signed cds and shirts, booklet pages named after you, and voice samplings in a song. This, except for a few wildly odd criticisms, was a great experience for us and for the fans that were made to feel, rightfully, that they were a part of our project. It quite literally could not have been done without them...YOU, reading this. Some of you even became good friends along the way. We believe that the fun, diversity, oddness, and energy of Fall Of The House Of Even was made possible by this liberating approach. We can't help but believe in the creative freedom we will be allowed by actually living at my house with the studio in the basement. I have no doubt that this endeavor will spawn a whole new slew of adventurous, strange, raw, and beautiful songs and outtakes. In the face of all this it is a piece of hard reality that none of us in the band have access to funds beyond what keeps us alive. If we did I would not ask for help.

So once again we are looking towards our fan base to help support this record. Here are the ways in which you can contribute:

1: The most simple is a 30.00 - 99.00 dollar donation: You will receive an autographed cd, a shirt of your choosing from our present collection, stickers and buttons, and your name, or whatever you represent (company, band, etc..), on the booklet as a contributor.

2: 100.00 to 149.00 dollar donation: One of the concepts on the record is thresholds. Each page of the booklet will be a door. You can have your name, company, band, etc, written on one of these doors. You can even send us a picture of your very own door if you want to. You will also receive an autographed cd and your name, or whatever you represent (company, band, etc..), on the booklet as a contributor.

3: 150.00 to 200.00 dollar donation: The front cover will be a collage that I, John Jughead Pierson, compile from photos that YOU send us. The cover of the record will be created by your contribution of any kind of photo you want. (self portrait, some art work you have the rights to, your house, your dog, a hole in the ground, a picture of you looking directly into the sun, whatever you want.) You will also receive an autographed cd and your name, or whatever you represent (company, band, etc..), on the booklet as a contributor. And a 11 by 17 autographed poster of the collaged artwork.

And Finally one of the most exciting to us:

4: $30.00 to $50.00 invitation: During the recording we will be hosting a few nights of Living Room shows. You will be invited to our house in Chicago to partake of one acoustic show, a home-cooked meal prepared for you from the band itself, and a night full of drinking, music and shanagans. (If you are from out of town, we are allowing a few people to stay the night if requested, so they don't have to drive hours home tired and drunk.) We do not supply transportation Here are the dates:

Thursday May 29th

Thursday June 5th

Friday June 6th

The Living Room Shows will go quick so please RSVP with a payment ASAP

All payments can be made by cash or check by mail and made out to: Hope And Nonthings 5059 W Winona Chicago IL 60630
Or you can make a paypal payment to jrp@hopeandnonthings.com

Please email us at jrp@hopeandnonthings.com before sending a check, money order or payment to paypal. Just to make sure we have room or that donation tier still available.

Thank you. We are very excited about this opportunity

Update on Basement Show

EIB basement show with Unloveables, Methadones and Steinways

Hey so crazy crazy things afoot. I wanted to help my friend Frank from the Unloveables get a show in Chicago. It turned out all I could get was my own basement, but through a series of cool events we are now going to have The Methadones, The Unloveables, The Steinways, and yes, yes here it comes... the full line-up of Even In Blackouts. It is crazy because I just worked out a two day flight for Bice from Boston to Chicago and an even more insane flight plan for PHillip Hill. He will fly out of El Paso at 6am after a show with the Independents to chicago for the basement show and then he will fly out at 5:45 am to Albuquerque and catch a bus to Santa Fe for a show that night with the Independents. Oh the Hell we go through to be together.

So there it is:

Here are the details. The show will be starting exactly at 7pm so don't arrive late, because I am not announcing who is playing in what order.

7pm to 10pm
Monday April 2nd
5059 W Winona
Chicago, IL 60630
5 Bucks
we can only get about 50 in the basement at a time... so plan ahead.

enter side door. BYOB and kicked out by 10:30pm

Update
So, Even In Blackouts is once again forced to take an extended break. We are all working to make money. Luckily I get to try to do that while engaged in another passion of mine, Theater. I have three productions coming up this year. I am in a show called "You Asked For It" right now with the Neo Futurists. Then I will be playing a dog who plays guitar for a pretty big event in Millenium Park for April in May, called Go Dog Go. Then the band will hopefully go on a two week tour to Spain and Italy in late May and June, then I will come back to work on a project called Fools. Meanwhile, we are working to put out a live cd of the concerts we recorded in France and Spain. An artist friend is working on sculptures of us that he will then photograph and use for the art. This person also is incorporating us into a comic book, which I think is pretty cool,, and one of the things I wanted to acheive since I was a child holding the comic book version of Alice Coopers "From The Inside. For info about this fantastic artist you can go to: http://www.myspace.com/talesofthesidewalk
Keep in touch with us, never hesitate to send us an e-mail asking any question, or just to say "hi".
We are extremely proud of our last record, and pine for the day when we can afford to record and tour again. The record sadly lacks a little in distribution, but FDO is a great label, and I'm happy to be with them, hopefully on the way to establishing an eccletic yet congealed label of talented, diverse bands. Our record made a few "best of 2006" lists which made us happy. If you want the record but are having troubles finding it just e-mail us, or go get it at www.interpunk.com

thanks

EIB PROPOSITION

To All Even In Blackout fans and friends. We have very little time to raise money to pay for our upcoming record Fall Of The House Of Even. We have no money and no label yet has showed any interest in paying our recording bill. So we have come with a scheme that can happily also be seen as an interesting creative move and of benefit to you, yes you our fans and friends.

Here it is:

We are taking donations of any size to help complete this record. Any donation of more than 20 dollars will get your name thanked on the cd booklet.

A: Any Donator Donating an amount of $50 receives their name on the new cd an EIB button, keychain and sticker plus any three of the following items:

(Their own name, a loved one, a strangers, it doesn’t matter) For instance page three of the booklet could be: Maynard Schmerson’s Kitchen or Jello Biafra’s Library. (You don’t actually send us a photo, all the photos are actually of rooms in an abandoned house in Scotland.)

So, on this last tour after three weeks in Europe we flew from France to Scotland and from Ireland to Berlin and finished the tour in two more weeks. Does that sound easy? Well,it was. But the whole UK section was like a dream. There was no sleep, there was a deep fog over Scotland and Ireland and we were lead by the hand from gig to gig by three scottish guys known as Buzzbomb. We stayed at Billy Buzzbomb's amazing house (sanctuary). We made fun of our Irish promoter, daily, and gave him a long awaited nickname, Wheels (Sean McMully) Did I say we never slept? It was five shows in five days: Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Belfast, and Derry. And then at 5 in the morning the next day we flew to Berlin for a show that night to continue our European Tour. Wow! We were giddy, we were sleep depravated, and we had the most amazing amount of fun! Here are some pictures.
